Alan George

Alan George was built by the Hunslet Engine Company, Leeds, in 1894. Delivered new to Penrhyn Quarry in May of that year, the locomotive cost £500 and assigned maker's number. She was subjected to a hard working life; constantly relied on with minimal maintenance and running over poor quality quarry track. By 1953 Alan George had been laid up until eventually being privately sold upon closure of the quarry in 1965.

She saw restoration and light running in the 1970s, before changing hands again and arriving at the Teifi Valley Railway in 1983. Alan George has then seen active service, hauling passenger services and becoming an icon for the railway as it grew.

The railway held large-scale events in 1994 and 2004 to mark the locomotive's centenary and 110th birthday respectively, celebrating this remarkable locomotive.

Rebuilding

Alan George is currently undergoing an extensive overhaul to prepare her for a return to hauling passenger trains. The work is taking place off-site.

A lot of the chassis work is underway and nearing completion. The last piece of the puzzle is the boiler, which requires a fair amount of work.

A Facebook page has been created to provide updates as the rebuild progresses. For the latest information and more photos, click here (this link will take you to Facebook).

The strip down continues...the footplate, bunkers and saddle tank are now off!

Alan George has now arrived at the workshop where the rebuild will be taking place. The first task was to label all the pipework and components ahead of removal, as well as taking reference photographs before the strip-down.
